Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is required by most riders to validate the motorcycle entitlement on their licence (there are some exceptions for people with a full driving licence - depending upon when this was gained. See Licence Categories for further information).

This is normally a one day course, where you are taught the following, in accordance with the DVSA CBT syllabus:

  • Importance of using the right equipment and clothing, plus basic safety;
  • Introduction to your motorcycle and its' controls;
  • Basic machine maintenance and manual handling;
  • Riding on the outdoor "pad" - including:
    • Observations - including "blind-spot";
    • Starting and Stopping;
    • Slow riding;
    • Figures of 8 and slalom;
    • U-turns;
    • Controlled and emergency stops;
    • Normal braking and gear changing;
    • Right and left turns.
  •  Classroom based instruction including the system of motorcycle control.

Finally, you will be taken out on the road for a minimum of 2 hours, under the supervision of one of our trained instructors who gives advice and instruction via a radio.
