Motorcycle Licence Categories explained

Licence Categories changed with effect from 19 January 2013, so the category shown on your licence will depend upon when it was issued.

We will be happy to talk this through and help you decide what route is best for you.

Category P and Category AM: Mopeds - not exceeding 50cc

Mopeds, with an engine capacity not exceeding 50cc and restricted to 28mph (45kph). Minimum age: 16. (Note: Provisional Licence only covers Motor tricycles for physically disabled drivers).

You need to take a CBT every 2 years, if you wish to continue riding and have not passed a moped or motorcycle test.

You can ride a moped without L plates and without taking the full motorcycle test if either:

  • you have a car driving licence and a compulsory basic training (CBT) certificate
  • you passed your driving test before 1 February 2001

You must complete a CBT course to confirm your full moped licence if you passed your car driving test on or after 1 February 2001.

Your CBT certificate for riding mopeds is then valid for as long as your car driving licence.

Category A (Un-restricted):

Machine Capacity - minimum 595cc and 40kW, with no maxima.

Staged access route. Minimum age - 21. You must have held an A2 licence for a minimum of 2 years and complete a two part practical test

Machine Capacity - 115cc to 125cc and no more than 11kW. Capable of at least 55mph.

Minimum Age - 17. You may ride this machine with a CBT and you must display L-Plates.

If you wish to pass your test - you must complete a CBT, followed by Theory and two-part Practical tests.

Category A2 (Standard Motorcycle):

Machine Capacity - at least 395cc and between 20kW and 35kW. Power to weight ratio no more than 0.2kW/kg. Machine must not be derived from vehicle more than twice its' power (i.e. there are limits on Restriction).
